Dear Parents and Community Members, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for the last three years. I have been honored to be the Principal of Indian Land Intermediate School, and truly enjoyed my time here. We have not only transformed a building and environment, but have continued to grow both our staff and students. At the conclusion of this school year I will no longer be serving as Principal of ILIS. I am moving into the Principal role at Indian Land Elementary. My tenure here has been such a highlight in my career in education. I am excited for the new adventure ahead and I am happy to continue to serve the Lancaster County School District. Thank you for all the kind words and support over the years. I wish my ILIS family all the best. Sincerely, Brad Johnson

Happy Wednesday, Warriors! We have a throwback post for you from April. Yes, April is considered "throw back" now that it's May! ;) For Earth Day, fifth graders in Mrs. Roberts' and Mrs. Goodwin's class used materials that would normally be thrown away to create something new. The assignment was to design and build something that was useful and/or artistic. Teachers supplied items such as cardboard boxes, jars, bottles, and packing supplies. These students really used their imaginations to make some awesome projects! We are so impressed, the projects look amazing! Thanks for sharing with us Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Goodwin!

Did you know the Titanic sunk 111 years ago this year? Students are still fascinated by the story of the ill fated ship even all these years later. Ms. Chiravelli used the history of the Titanic and merged it with her math lesson! She writes: "We are doing a Titanic themed measurement project! Students each received a boarding and passenger pass. At the end of our project, they will be able to learn about their passenger. Students are converting measurements using customary, metric, and time. The measurements are all centered around the Titanic, such as the type of food served (capacity) and progression of the events that occurred (time)." What a way to make math come alive, Ms. Chiravelli! Thanks for sharing!

We want to send a HUGE congratulations to Ms. Riddle and 40 of her amazing band students! She writes: "Did you know the Titanic sunk 111 years ago this year? Students are still fascinated by the story of the ill fated ship even all these years later. Ms. Chiravelli used the history of the Titanic and merged it with her math lesson! She writes: "This weekend, 40 ILIS Band students participated in the SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Festival at Sullivan Middle School. There were 16 entries that performed — 4 of them received a Superior Rating from the judges (the highest rating given) and 12 received an Excellent Rating (the second highest rating given). Most of those Excellent Ratings were only a point or two away from Superior! We are so proud of the progress these students have made this year. Please congratulate these wonderful musicians!!” Remember- our students have only been in band for a most two years. We are so proud of their hard work, and the support given to them by Ms. Riddle. Way to go, Warriors!

Happy Monday! We hope you all had a nice weekend! We wanted to share a project with you that Ms. Phillips’ class is working on. She writes, “Today and over the next two weeks my students will learn, while making observations, that plants obtain materials they need for growth mainly from air and water. They created a makeshift Hydroponic garden to watch plants grow without soils!” These look amazing! We will be sure to update you with how their plants are growing!

We are only ONE MONTH AWAY from the ILIS Players’ performance of “Aladdin”! ILIS Players, also known as our Drama Club, is made up students who joined through an audition process back in December. Since then, they’ve rehearsed twice a week after school running lines, working on blocking and preparing for the performance of their lives! This year, the directors were able to create three casts to include even more students than last year. You can check out performances at the Lancaster High School Multipurpose Building May 13th, May 14th and May 15th! Tickets will be on sale soon!

Our art department is an amazing place at ILIS! Exciting lessons are happening all the time. We are thrilled to highlight one that combines history AND art! This week in Mr. Carter’s class, his 5th grade students are working on Sumi-E. This is a Japanese style of ink painting used for centuries as a way of capturing the beauty of nature. In this activity students were allowed to explore the brush and discover different mark making techniques. Thanks for sharing with us, Mr. Carter!
